ActiveTrans does really important work for Chicagoland, so I urge you to join. (Harking back to their origins as the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, all members also get copies of their recently updated and indispensable Chicagoland Bike Map, now in its fifth edition.

The Active Transportation Alliance has just announced this year’s Open Streets event, scheduled for August 1. This year, the plan includes an unbroken string of pedestrian and bike friendly community events starting in Logan Square to the north and going all the way down to Little Village. (Some of my hardcore cycling friends like to propose that a major Chicago street become a car-free passageway. This event is a kind of preview of what something like that might look like, but with lots of activities like classes, performances, music, and more.)
